Travel Guide

Heraklion has faced many challenges over the years in its attempts to improve transport infrastructure, the condition of its roads and the sheer volume of cars which make life in the city difficult for drivers and pedestrians. The Municipality has instigated several programmes of redevelopment for the city centre and the historic Old Town, integrating traffic management into an overall policy to produce a cleaner, more attractive city for future generations.

Within the current drive to regenerate our city, large car parks on the outskirts of town, along with better control of traffic flow and many newly pedestrianised streets, we are demonstrating what can be achieved in Heraklion. The vision is for residents and visitors alike to be able to enjoy more fully the rich heritage contained in our city, in surroundings that allow for easy movement, good air and green spaces away from traffic congestion.
