The Municipal Gallery

The founding of a Municipal Gallery has been an old expectation in the city of Heraklion, while its fulfillment has always been a dream for every Heraklion governing authority. Today the “Heraklion Municipal Gallery” can be said to have a form, being hosted in the “Saint Marcus” Basilica until the actual Cultural Centrebuilding is constructed. Selective works from the rich heritage of works of art owned by the Municipality of Heraklion are being displayed there. Maria Fiorakis, Lefteris Kanakakis, Thomas Fanourakis’ paintings, as well as others’, are some of the works decorating the “Saint Marcus” Basilica from time to time. Several items owned by the Municipality have been included in an album edited by the “V.M.L” in 1994 under the title “Heraklion Municipal Library”.

The idea for the temporary housing of the “Heraklion Municipal Gallery” in the “Saint Marcus” Basilica came after the realization of great events, like the Domenicus Theotokopoulos exhibitions (1990), the Icons of the Cretan School (1993) and Fagum Portraits (1998) as well as their corresponding international conventions.
