Gavdos

It is the settlement located on the outmost south tip of Europe, 20 nautical miles from Crete and about 150 nautical miles off the African Coast. The island's shape is triangular and covers an area of just 37 square km.It is a virgin island and has not been yet flooded by visitors. The few residents are scattered in its four little villages, the capital Kastri, Vatsiana, Ampelos and a small haven, Karave. There is enough water but electricity is produced only with the use of generators. There is regular 3 hour itinerary from Palaiochora and Sfakia but the latter includes stops at Agia Roumeli and Sougia. It is believed to be the ancient Ogigia, Calypso's island. Read more
