Curriculum Vitae of Mayor Mr John Kourakis


Born in Tylissos, Heraklion, Crete on 6/10/1955.

He is married to Xanthi Mouzouraki and has two children: Vasiliki, a graduate of Economic Sciences and Andonis, a student. Up to his election as Deputy Mayor, he worked in the National Electrical Company (ΔΕΗ).

Political and Social Activity

  • Chairman of Working Centre of Heraklion from 1987 until 1994.
  • Member of Administration of National Workers' Union of Greece (ΓΣΕΕ) 1992-1993.
  • Member of Prefectoral Committee PASOK Heraklion.
  • Municipal Adviser Heraklion 1990 - 1994
  • Member of Parliament PASOK from 1993 until 2003
  • Mayor of Heraklion, Crete from 2003

Parliamentary Activity

  • Was elected PASOK MP for Heraklion in the elections of 1993, 1996 and 2000.
  • As MP, participated in the Permanent Parliamentary Economic and Social Affairs Committee.
  • Following the elections of 2000 was elected Chairman of Permanent Parliamentary Social Affairs Committee.
  • Participated in various Sectors of Work of Greek Parliament.
  • Proposed many Bills; mainly in the subjects of Social Care and Employment.

Governmental Work

Under-Secretary of Culture on issues relating to Athletics
His service was accompanied with major and innovative work:

  • Author of New Athletic Law that became more widely acceptable
  • Launched major athletic work throughout the country
  • Planning and implementation of athletic infrastructures in all of Crete
  • Organisation and acceleration of Olympic preparation
  • Modernisation of the operation of the General Secretary of Sports
  • Radical restructuring of programmes of mass sports
